My mother-in-law and Alex

During her first five years of life, she would be in and out of the hospital and with two other needy young children at home my wife and I needed help beyond what a baby sitter would be expected to do. During this critical time in our daughter's life both grandmothers were critical to our existence and Alex's well-being.

My Mother and Mother-in-law were always available, ready and willing to take on as much responsibility as necessary till we nurtured our daughter to health. Their help was absolutely essential and I don't know what would have transpired had it not been for their heroic efforts. It was clear to me that Mother Nature has made a natural role for grandmothers to want to help their grandchildren survive. Fortunately, when Alexandra reached the age of five the disease left as mysteriously as it had arrived, still no explanation for why or what was the cause. And I am happy to tell you that today Alexandra, is a thriving 11 year old who is the star of her soccer and basketball teams and has more compassion than any kid I know. She dreams of someday being a teacher for kids with special needs.
